Merino Wool for Winter Warmth

For climbers, keeping warm can be a matter of life and death. Amongst all the high-tech clothing they wear one natural fibre is becoming more popular, merino wool. It is used as a baselayer, in other words for the clothing next to the skin. Outdoor pursuit specialists have discovered that merino undergarments regulate humidity so wearers sweat less and keep a more constant temperature in a wide range of conditions.

By sleeping with merino wool blankets you benefit from these superb properties with much less effort! But merino wool bedding can vary in quality so how do you know which to choose?

Here are a few things you should consider.

Duvet or Blanket? Wool duvets are great but a good merino blanket is at least as warm and it has other advantages. Blankets are easier to clean and they are much more versatile. They can add style and comfort in the lounge, car or conservatory. If you own a motorhome, caravan or even a tent a merino wool blanket is a great way to take home comforts with you. Arelle Blankets can give you advice about the right sort of blanket for any situation.

Which Fibre? Not all wools are equal and merino really is the best so make sure that is what you are getting. “wool” or “wool filled” is NOT the same. Merino can be blended with other fibres to achieve different textures. Some of our blankets contain cashmere to give a silkier feel but we reckon that our finest blankets are made with a blend of merino and camel hair. The camel hair adds softness and resilience. It also adds a fair bit to the price but as the blanket will last a lifetime it’s an investment that repays in lasting comfort.

Does the Texture Matter? Definitely. Merino wool can be spun into threads and woven just like any other fabric but to really benefit from its amazing properties look for blankets with a deep fleecy texture that mimics the fleece on the sheep. All Arelle Blankets have two layers of deep fleecy texture that provides support and warmth. It’s that texture that also keeps air circulating around you to prevent uncomfortable overheating. Avoid blankets with the texture of a “fleece” jacket which has very little depth.

How much Merino? This can vary a lot, particularly in mattress toppers. Poor quality toppers are often sold with a wool fleece on only one side and are described as “reversible” for use in different seasons. Avoid these toppers! Merino wool adapts to different temperatures and provides support so just sleep on as much as you can! Look for the gsm (grams per square metre) number. This can vary from a miserly 300 to a sumptuous 1000. Needless to say Arelle Blankets contain more merino than any other blanket we have seen for sale in the UK.

What Size do I need? Don’t rely on terms like “king” or “queen” as they do not guarantee the size of the blanket. Don’t skimp on the size. Your top blanket should hang well over the sides and allow an extra 20cm for each person. A topper should be just smaller than the bed. And if your bed is not a standard size or shape we’ll make a blanket especially for you.

Bedding for Bigger Beds

Recent news items have highlighted the fact that more people are buying bigger beds. A normal double bed that is 4’6″ wide is now considered crowded with two people in it let alone the dog as well.
Most bedding manufacturers have been slow to catch up as investing in machinery for larger sizes is expensive. No such trouble for us at ARELLE BLANKETS. We specialise in made-to-measure so anything is possible.
When you get up to 7 and 8 feet wide beds duvets start to get a bit unmanageable and a soft fleecy blanket is just the thing.
And of course a duvet isn’t much good if your bed is not a conventional shape. Again no problem for us. We’ve made a few triangular blankets for the prow end of yachts. We look forward to your challenge!

How to choose merino bedding

So you know all the great benefits of sleeping with merino wool but how do you pick the best?  Here are a few tips.

Duvet or Blanket?  Wool duvets are great but a good merino blanket is at least as warm and it has other advantages.  Blankets are easier to clean  (read more on this below) and they are much more versatile.  They can add style and comfort in the lounge, car or conservatory and I’ve even taken them camping.

Which Fibre?  Not all wools are equal and merino really is the best so make sure that is what you are getting.   Merino can be blended with other fibres to change its texture.  Cashmere gives a silkier feel but my personal favourite is camel hair that adds softness and resilience.  I know one couple who have enjoyed using a German made merino-camel blanket for over 40 years.

Texture:  This is a vital consideration.  Merino can be spun and woven to look like a conventional blanket but to really benefit from its amazing properties look for blankets with a deep fleecy texture that mimics the fleece on the sheep.  The resilient merino will keep this texture and traps air in tiny spaces.  This provides the support and warmth that you expect from merino wool.   Avoid blankets with the texture of a “fleece” jacket which has very little depth.  There really is little point in paying for merino wool when it is made like this.

How much Merino?   This can vary a lot, particularly in mattress toppers.  They are often sold with a wool fleece on only one side and are described as “reversible” using one side for winter and the other for summer.  This is probably just a way of using less wool and keeping the price down.   One of the most important properties of merino wool is that it stabilises temperature and humidity so I do not see the point of this approach.   Just get as much merino wool as you can!  Look for the gsm (grams per square metre) number.  This can vary from a miserly 300 to a sumptuous 1000 and thicker toppers will give much better support.

Size:  Don’t rely on terms like “king” or “queen” as they do not guarantee the size of the blanket.   Measure your bed.  Your top blanket should hang well over the sides and allow an extra 20cm for each person.  A topper should be just smaller than the bed and should be held tight by corner straps.  If you can’t find an “off-the-shelf” blanket of the correct size contact a company that will make one to your requirements.

Cleaning:   It is obviously right to be concerned about the cleanliness of your bedding but again, merino wool helps you out.   Merino resists bacteria, mites and other bugs that you may be worried about.  Merino will remain odour free.  Just shake and air the blanket.  If there is a mark, wipe it with a damp cloth.  You can even vacuum clean it.  All this is far easier that dealing with a wool-filled duvet – and how often would you clean the inside of that?  And don’t worry about your pet finding out about the comfort of merino, as it certainly will.  Arelle Blankets sells wool pet bedding just because of those self-cleaning properties.

Service:  A good quality merino blanket is a very special piece of bedding so, unless you are absolutely certain, talk to the seller before you buy.  Ask for guarantees – 10 years would be reasonable.  Look for companies that offer samples, make special fibre blends or a made-to-measure service. Even if you do not make use of these services they indicate a company that is able to do the best for its customers.  Arelle Blankets offers all of these services.  Of course quality always comes at a price but your merino blanket will cosset you for a third of your life.  By making sure you get the best it will become a family heirloom!

Keeping warm with merino wool

If you are anything like us you don’t want to sleep in a bedroom that stays warm all night.  In the first place it is a waste of money and a bit of fresh air from an open window is healthier too.  But how to keep warm?  You might cover up with a duvet but the high quality alternative with a lot of other benefits is a good quality merino wool blanket.  In Germany, where the winters are colder, cosy merino blankets are in great demand. Fleecy merino mattress toppers are very popular too.  This isn’t a recent trend.  Germans take health and environmental matters very seriously!  In the forests high above the Rhine a small family company has been making merino blankets for nearly 50 years. They should know about keeping warm.  The first snow of the winter has already fallen.  That is where Arelle Blankets are made.

And what about during the day?  Look around for merino wool underwear.  Unfortunately Arelle does not supply this. You’ll find it in shops that supply better quality outdoor gear because it keeps you at a nice even temperature and doesn’t make you sweat too much and……. well just read the blurb on the packet.  Even if you don’t climb mountains in your spare time you can benefit from the same super properties of merino wool and you don’t even have to get out of bed!  High quality merino wool products (and there are some poor ones around) are not cheap but they are good value.  And if they let you turn the thermostat down a degree or two you could be saving money and the environment.
